The Staatstheater Nürnberg, the largest multi-genre theatre in Bavaria, invites you to discover the world of theatre, dance and music in all its richness and to enjoy the performance of supreme quality by artists from around the world who have made Nuremberg their home on a permanent or temporary basis. We want to be a place of diversity. The Staatstheater Nürnberg is a guarantor of top-notch proficiency – and offers much to spark your curiosity.
Trust and curiosity are also the most important qualities for an artist to have. Creativity requires openness and curiosity from all parties. Artists have to reflect and ponder and plan, but no piece of art can be planned to perfection. Nor can any performance or a piece of music manage to please everyone. An evening of theatre may well touch us deeply but leave the person next to us blithely unaffected. Attending a stage performance or concert also means staying alert to the people in the audience around us. Each of us reacts with a different sensibility and humour to what unfolds on stage.
Not only in matters of artistic fare are changes on the way for the Staatstheater Nürnberg. The closure of the theatre during the Covid pandemic was a very difficult time for theatre artists and staff and audiences, but we used the opportunity to advance the digitization of theatre. We will continue to increase the amount of content that we put out in digital format, thereby creating real added value for our clientele. The upcoming opera-house construction project is a great chance for us to make the Staatstheater fit for the future in architectural, urban-planning and, of course, artistic terms. The Staatstheater and the local authority are preparing this huge project meticulously. On all levels we have started on our path to a theatre of the future.
Our Staatstheater is conceived as a mirror of our restless, mad and unfathomable world, by turns absurdly comical and disconsolate – but also a mirror in which we see people and things as they really are, not the distorted or prettified images that they want us to see.
