Giuseppe Martucci was one of the few Italian composers of his period to shun opera, preferring to write atmospheric and opulent pieces for orchestra. One such work was his “Notturno”, originally conceived as a serenade for piano and later expanded for other instruments. Mozart’s Flute Concerto of 1778 contains echoes of a tune in its final movement that would later appear in “The Abduction from the Seraglio”. Dmitri Shostakovich’s 11th Symphony was the composer’s response to the quelled Hungarian uprising in 1956. Following the demise of Stalinism, Shostakovich used his new-found freedom to address the failed 1905 revolution in Russia, as reflected in the title of the symphony.
