After five years at the helm of the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg Joana Mallwitz is stepping aside. In her final scheduled concert at the Nuremberg venue she looks back on her time as General Music Director, an incumbency that encompassed the many noteworthy concerts given and also a raft of programmes cancelled because of the Covid pandemic. Mahler’s Fourth, belatedly performed here, is based on the Bavarian children’s nursery rhyme “Das himmlische Leben” and evolves into a musical fairy landscape. The second half of the concert is devoted to memorable moments from Joana Mallwitz’s time in Nuremberg.
