The 3rd Philharmonic Concert is a pot pourri of Romantic compositions. “Music for Orchestra” by Rudi Stephan, who was fated to die in the First World War, distils orchestral structures into a brief 20-minute piece that is unique amongst musical works of the early 20th century. Camille Saint-Saëns rejected romantic sentimentality. The work chosen from his catalogue is a tightly structured cello composition that nonetheless borders on the effusive in parts. Schumann’s symphony in C major was his mechanism for coping with severe depression but still manages to be fresh and cheery while communicating a romantic urge to express one’s inner self.

PROGRAMME:
Rudi Stephan: Musik für Orchester
Camille Saint-Saëns: Konzert für Violoncello und Orchester, Nr. 1 in a-Moll op. 33
Robert Schumann: Symphonie Nr. 2 C-Dur op. 61
