Born in Bilbao (Spain). Received his education in his hometown and completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory for Professional Dance, Madrid. In 1987 he has been engaged with Young Ballet of Bilbao and subsequently with Ballet Basque. Afterwards he became dancer at the ballet of Theater St.Gallen. From 1994-1995 until 2000-2001 he was member of Leipzig Ballet under the direction of Uwe Scholz. Afterwards he changed to the ballet of Deutsche Oper Berlin where he has been engaged until August 2004. He danced soloparts in choreographies by Uwe Scholz. He also danced in choreographies by Jiří Kylián, John Cranko, Heinz Spoerli, Yuri Vamos, Mario Schröder et al. as well as parts of the classical repertoire. He received his university degree in Dance, with a focus on choreography and interpretation techniques of dance. Regarding education he is trained with the Waganowa Method and the method of the Royal Academy of Dance. He worked as balletmaster in Berlin, Sevilla, Barcelona and…

Since the season 2008/2009 José Hurtado is engaged as First Rehearsal Director and Deputy Balletdirector at Staatstheater Nürnberg.
