Werther is coming to Wetzlar, his heart full of rapturous love for nature, poetry and a longing for love. Soon, it becomes even fuller with Charlotte, the daughter of a widowed official. Yet Charlotte is in love with Albert, and although she does love Werther, she recognises Albert’s worth and holds to her promise. Werther enters into a manic love from which there is only one terrible escape.

Massenet and his librettists were not frozen with reverence before Goethe’s classic, and instead worked the touching and tragic love story into a theatrical tale teeming with power and life. A meeting between three young people starts out cheerfully and ends in disaster. The Staatstheater Nürnberg will host the concert premiere of the opera.
