Schosta­ko­witsch - Men­dels­sohn

A concert of contrasts: Felix Mendelssohn, the ray of sunshine among the great composers, the musical reconciler, meets in Shostakovich a colleague who was severely battered by the political storms of the 20th century. In his final symphony, Shostakovich takes a kind of musical stock of his life. The composer liberates himself from the imperative to process his contemporary world through music; instead, he turns inward to contemplate the very roots of his creative work. While Mendelssohn shines with cheerful brilliance in his popular Violin Concerto, Shostakovich traces the contours of a life marked by rugged terrain with equal virtuosity.
