Hans Rott is one of the great unfortunate and unfinished stories of Austrian music. In his 1st Symphony, one hears the admiration for Richard Wagner as much as the foundations for the later work by his university friend Gustav Mahler. This major early work is not perfect, yet precisely through its fractures and roughness, it holds the promise of a great future—a promise that Rott was ultimately unable to fulfil. Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, by contrast, is a late work, his final major composition, marked by the melancholy of a life drawing to a close and a search for simplicity and profound meaning.
