Mahler - Reger

Gustav Mahler’s music is a celebration of life, but the composer lost his courage in his final years. Defeated by hostility, disease and the loss of loved ones, his works grew darker. Das Lied von der Erde is an expression of melancholy and departure: The orchestral songs are both a zenith and an end point of Mahler’s art. Max Reger wrote his Romantic Suite based on three poems by Eichendorff. Like Mahler’s music, it, too, feels like a final farewell to the ever-receding spirit of Romanticism, shortly before the outbreak of the First World War.
