Made two / All wal­king

“Made Two/All Walking” concludes the 2026/27 season of the Staatstheater Nürnberg Ballet of Difference. In this signature piece from 2021 that arose from his trips to West Africa, Richard Siegal explores how rhythm can be more than mere impulse meeting our ears. Rhythm can work as a binding force: When we clap to the same beat, we create community and become part of it. But what happens if we dance to our own rhythms? Are we damned to separation? Made Two/All Walking, danced in boots instead of pointe shoes, aims to ensure that the interplay of different rhythms does not merely generate dissonance, but rather, through attentiveness to one another—to the other—creates a new quality of interaction in which harmony and intertwining prevail.

With support from Njamy Sitson, a sought-after musician with roots in Cameroon, African polyrhythms make up the musical heart of Made Two/All Walking: An example of intercultural dialogue in its purest sense, that goes under the skin and directly into the body. The production is both sensorily and intellectually challenging with an electronic-acoustic composition by Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch, avant-garde costumes by Flora Miranda and fascinating video/lighting design by Matthias Singer.
