Admiral Morosus has defied storms and adversaries, but he finds himself alone in old age. Schneidebart the barber believes it does not have to be this way. All he has to do is find him a woman—a young, docile, quiet one! This is because Morosus despises loud noises of all sorts. His nephew Henry, who has joined a traveling theatre troupe, sees in this an opportunity. Could the old man’s fortune be diverted to the theater troupe by means of a staged marriage that ends in a massive uproar? A cunning transfer of funds from the military budget to the cultural budget? Everyone plays their part in a perfect performance that proves too much for Morosus.
