The Scour­ge of Heaven

When engineer George Orr awoke one morning from troubling dreams, he found the world had changed immensely and was distraught to see that it was just like his most recent dream. And so it went, night after night; only he himself still knew what the world had once been like. Pure horror. Terrified, he has shunned sleep ever since; in a panic, he seeks out a psychiatrist – and when the doctor realizes the power inherent in Orr’s dreams to transform global realities, he resolves to harness them for his own ends. But these manipulations have fatal consequences…

Under the pseudonym “F. Wiesel,” Hanke Wilsmann and Jost von Harleßern create idiosyncratic science-fiction worlds with a passion for detail and miniatures. After three years of researching digital and virtual theatre formats with their own venue in Graz, they turn, for their project in Nuremberg, to the queen of speculative fiction and feminist science fiction: Ursula K. Le Guin.

The audience experiences "The Scourge of Heaven" from two perspectives: wearing VR headsets, you are immersed in the dream world of the protagonist, George Orr; you experience the production as mixed reality, in which the real stage and virtual elements merge. In certain sequences, you are fully immersed in virtual reality. Without VR headsets, you follow the plot in the traditional way and witness a constantly shifting reality. Both groups of audience members experience the same story – but from different perspectives.
