In his “Konzertstück”, Schumann experimented with an unusual instrumentation: The soloist is not a single instrument, but rather the entire section of horns. He composed the concerto to exploit the capabilities of the newly developed valve horn, capabilities that extended far beyond those of the natural horn. Anton Bruckner was no disciple of classical-romantic German music; his source of inspiration lay in the operas of Richard Wagner. In his expansive Romantische symphony, Bruckner conjures a musical landscape of medieval cities and impressions of nature – a world of the past, recounted within an intense, modern atmosphere.
