Oval, New Work (premiere) and Unitxt

Music by Alva Noto

The cooperation between Richard Siegal and Alva Noto began in 2013, when the American choreographer premiered Unitxt with the Bayerisches Staatsballett, inspired by the eponymous, hypermodern musical composition and a partnership with industry designer Konstantin Grcic. Originally conceived as an exploration of the interplay between ballet and technology, this artistic dialogue reaches new highs in the trilogy Noise Signal Silence.

The programme includes Unitxt, Siegal’s signature work, as well as Oval, which was created for the Staatsballett Berlin in 2019. Oval intensively explores the overlaps between ballet and technology, and asks how this dynamic is not only external but also embedded with ballet itself, understanding it as both a (bio-)mechanical and aesthetic phenomenon. Twelve dancers move through an immersive, futuristic room illuminated by a striking oval LED installation, all to the electrifying score by Alva Noto.

The evening reaches its high point with a world premiere of a new composition by Alva Noto and light design by Matthias Singer. This debut creates a dreamy atmosphere and brings Siegal’s vision of the interweaving of ballet and technology to the stage in its most refined and impressive form yet.
