Macbeth’s guilty conscience will not let him sleep. Unlike him, however, the large organ in the Meistersingerhalle spends most of its time dormant – but composer Stefan Johannes Hanke would like to awaken it for his commissioned work for the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg. The symphonic poem Macbeth by Richard Strauss and Verdi’s ballet music that has rarely been played in the opera are based directly on Shakespeare’s antihero. With his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Dmitri Shostakovich placed the character of Lady Macbeth in a modern setting and let this icon of unscrupulousness become a great and resistant woman in love.

PROGRAMME:
Richard Strauss: Macbeth op. 23
Stefan Johannes Hanke: Organ concert “Sleep no more” (world premiere)
Giuseppe Verdi: Ballet from the opera "Macbeth"
Dmitri Shostakovich: Suite from the opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk"
