Die englischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts suchten häufig nach Vorbildern aus Renaissance und Barock, als England eine erste musikalische Blüte erlebte. Einige von ihnen verbanden die Liedkunst von John Dowland, Henry Purcell und anderen mit modernen Kompositionsverfahren und fanden so zu einer neuen, typischen Form des englischen Kunstlieds. Der Tenor Martin Platz und die Pianistin Akemi Murakami winden musikalische Kränze aus Liedern von Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gerald Finzi, Roger Quilter und dem „Orpheus britannicus“ Benjamin Britten.
