Everybody to whom music, chamber music in particular, means something bows down in amazement to Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C major – or they swoon. This work holds a singular place in Schubert’s oeuvre, indeed, in music literature as a whole. It is puzzling and it is consummate … It is hopeless to fully decipher or summarise the ringing mystery of this work with words,” says music critic Joachim Kaiser. Shaker Loops from 1978 is a masterpiece of minimalist music and is inspired by the Shakers religious community, whose ritual shaking dances would put them in a state of enraptured frenzy.

PROGRAMME:
John Adams: Shaker Loops for string septet
Franz Schubert: String Quintet in C major D 956
