Mary wanders sleeplessly through the corridors at night. Morphine in her veins, the fog of the past clouds her mind. At first glance, her family seems happy. Her youngest son Edmund has the flu, nothing more. Yet the things lying beneath the surface slowly come to light. Eugene O’Neill examines the repression and overcoming of personal tragedies within a family through a cast of impressively multifaceted characters, people who are desperately wrestling with each other and themselves. People who simultaneously love and detest one another with equal passion.

Director Rieke Süßkow – previously invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen with her Nuremberg production of Werner Schwab’s "ÜBERGEWICHT, unwichtig: UNIFORM" – is continuing her work with radical design vocabulary. Music composed specifically for the production plays when characters would otherwise be speaking. Each character is assigned an instrument. The script no longer says exactly what a character is thinking and saying, which allows the audience to make their own discoveries and memories.
