If your holiday in Italy was far too short once again, it’s nice to bring a souvenir back home. In his concert overture In the South, Edward Elgar processed the impressions from his winter sojourn in Alassio, Liguria in 1903/04. Shortly before his famous Carmen, Georges Bizet completed his second symphony based on motifs he had collected during his stay in Rome years prior. 22-year-old Richard Strauss followed Johannes Brahms’ advice and went on an educational trip to Rome and Naples in 1886. It was during this trip that he outlined the work that would become his first symphonic poem and sent sunny greetings from Italy to his home in Munich.

PROGRAMME:
Edward Elgar: In the South (Alassio) op. 50
Georges Bizet: Sinfonie Nr. 2 "Souvenirs de Rome"
Richard Strauss: Aus Italien op. 16
