A concert packed with surprises. With the sudden crash of an unexpected kettledrum Haydn sent a jolt through his London audience, which promptly labelled the work Haydn’s “Surprise Symphony”. The Staatsphilharmie has itself now startled the music scene by mounting the German premiere of Detlev Glanert’s Concert for Trumpet, a work that focuses on US music and jazz and is dedicated to Glanert’s esteemed colleague Oliver Knussen. Béla Bartók, terminally ill and forced into exile, wrote Concert for Orchestra, a work that leads its listeners from darkness into light.

PROGRAMME:
Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 94, “Surprise Symphony”
Detlev Glanert: Concert for Trumpet and Orchestra (German premiere)
Béla Bartók: Concert for Orchestra
