Walter Scott’s historical novels triggered a veritable Scotland mania amongst Europe’s Romantics. Mendelssohn himself travelled through the Highlands and distilled his impressions into his 3rd Symphony, the “Scottish”, which is heavily influenced by Scottish melodies. Max Bruch, on the other hand, used original folk songs as the basis for his “Scottish Fantasy”, which is a violin concerto in all but name.

James MacMillan is a Scotsman and probably the most significant living composer that his homeland has produced. His “Larghetto” launches our musical tour through the Scotland of the Romantics, which also provided the setting for Scott’s “The Bride of Lammermoor”.

PROGRAMME:
James MacMillan: Larghetto for Orchestra (2017)
Max Bruch: Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra in E-flat major, op. 46
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Symphony No. 3 in A minor, op. 56 “Scottish”
