Fables and fairies are the theme of this chamber concert. The title “Once upon a time…” could be interpreted differently, considering Shostakovich’s op. 147 viola sonata was his final work. This retrospective piece, in contemplation of the composer’s mortality, is poignantly and often austerely beautiful – and definitely one of the supreme works written for viola.

PROGRAMME:
Robert Schumann: Fairy-Tale Pictures, op. 113, for viola and piano
Jörg Widmann: Once upon a time... 5 pieces in fairy-tale style for clarinet, viola and piano
Dmitri Shostakovich: Sonata, op. 147, for viola and piano
