Talestri – Queen of the Amazons
Directed by: Ilaria Lanzino
06.30 PM - 08.30 PM
In German and Italian with German and English surtitles
The Amazons are a tribe to themselves, shunning men in particular, whom they consider violent. However, when their designated queen, Talestri, falls in love with a man, the very foundation of their society is threatened.
As well as composing the music to “Talestri”, Maria Antonia Walpurgis also wrote the libretto and sang the title role. But as Elector of Saxony she had set her sights on more than simply demonstrating her talent as an artist. “Talestri” underscored her legitimacy as ruler and presented her as a woman who could reconcile two feuding sides. 250 years after the world premiere of the work Ilaria Lanzino explores whether this reconciliation has proved lasting.
