Anton Bruckner, the bizarre genius from Upper Austria, was at the height of his creative power when he went to work on his Symphony No. 5 in 1875. He called it his “contrapuntal masterpiece”: the monumental symphony slowly works up to its awe-inspiring final movement, in which all the contrapuntal links of the previous movements are revealed. Bruckner's Fifth is a stroke of genius, both technically and intuitively. Underpinning the whole is the symphony’s formal mastery, but audiences are presented with an unexpected and scarcely fathomable world of tones, sounds and harmonies, filled with confidence and trust in the divine world order.
