Seine Ausbildung zum Schauspieler absolvierte Anton Koelbl an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover. Wichtige Theaterstationen, in jüngeren Jahren, waren das Theater Basel bei Horst Statkus und Frank Baumbauer und das Theater Konstanz bei Ulrich Khuon und, in jüngerer Zeit, das Theater Augsburg bei Juliane Votteler. Die Begegnungen mit Herbert Achternbusch, Marcel Keller, Anne Lenk, Christoph Mehler, Stephan Müller, Lenja Schultze und, im Film, mit Alain Gsponer liegen ihm dabei besonders am Herzen. Anton Koelbl lebt und arbeitet auf dem Land und in der Stadt.
